Wharton, Texas....
a Great place to live, learn, work, and play!
WELCOME to tranquility! Nestled on the banks of the scenic Colorado River, Wharton
is located approximately 30 miles south of Sugar Land and is less than an hour's
drive southwest of downtown Houston on Highway 59. It is the prime location for
your new business and home! Full of hometown hospitality; Wharton, historic and
progressive, welcomes you to share the experience of community pride and to be a
part of the impact our growth is having on the future! Away from the traffic
jams and smog, Wharton is committed to cooperating with many ideas for growth
and development. Close enough to the "big cities" to stay connected, but far
enough away to remain personal and independent. Wharton is THE PLACE TO CALL
HOME!
Wharton was founded as the County Seat in April 1846, and today the city remains
a prime center for industry, education, medical services, agriculture and ranching.
The County Library and County Museum are located within the City of
Wharton. Away from the "big cities" we are delighted to offer
a municipal airport, a regional medical hospital and clinic, a state of the art
Civic Convention Center, a mass transit system, a main community college campus,
and the Wharton Independent School District is fully accredited by the Texas
Education Agency. Accompanying these amenities we are very
pleased to report a very low crime rate. Wharton is proud of its heritage,
strength, and community involvement. Relaxing recreation include parks created
along the Colorado River's east bank, one block from the downtown historical
courthouse square, antique shopping, and the County Museum. For the outdoors-person,
prime water fowl hunting and saltwater fishing are only minutes away. Enjoy
an over
night stay in one of our newly established bed and breakfasts or stay in one
of our
well cared for hotels. For your dining enjoyment, Wharton offers a variety of
entrees
including steak, seafood, and world class barbecue with all the trimmings and
mouth
watering homemade desserts.
The ever-growing,
qualified workforce is approximately one quarter of the population, and
potential employers, be ready to hit the ground running because the surrounding
Wharton community has a valuable and willing work force ready to be tapped.
Pulitzer Prize winner and Playwright, of To Kill A Mockingbird, Horton Foote,
a resident
of Wharton for 80 years summed up life in Wharton with warmth and pride, noting,
everybody in Wharton is everybody's neighbor. You can depend on them for help
and
the freedom to do your own thing. This is evident by individuals young and old
involved in civic service organizations within the city dedicated to growth,
safety, and development of the community.
Local residents raising $1,100,000.00 for the construction of
a new Boys and Girls Club and then another $1,000,000.00 supporting the Club
are prime examples of community pride and involvement. Other community projects
include the $1 million restoration of the old Southern Pacific Depot, originally
constructed in 1912, and the $7.l million restoration of the County Courthouse
built in the late 1800’s.
